How SKILLED works for you
Geoff - Field Projects Team Leader
Tell us a bit about the work you do with SKILLED
The Field Managed Modifications (FMM) team of SKILLED personnel are responsible for the management of field projects within the Long Island Point facility at Hastings, Victoria. These are projects where the scoping, justification, approvals, design/engineering, tendering, execution of works, contractual and financial administration, commissioning and start up, is supported by this site based team. Being hands on and readily available, allows constant oversight of execution contractors, immediately addresses any execution issues and applies the desired focus upon safety to ensure everybody goes home safely each day. Our team comprises project managers, a financial administrator and a technical officer.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Many aspects of the role are enjoyable. Job satisfaction is very achievable when being responsible for the field managed projects from first conception, right through to commissioning and start-up. The personnel at site are very supportive of each other. The work atmosphere is great. I am fortunate to work in a geographically attractive site on the Mornington Peninsula, south of Melbourne. Even though we work long hours, (average 50 per week) the trade-off is living fairly close to work and not having to negotiate peak hour traffic on a daily basis.
Why did you decide to join SKILLED?
There was an opportunity to source a new provider for this role back in the 1990’s. I recall it was a case of SKILLED and myself interviewing each other. The result was a joint effort between SKILLED and I, to provide the services for the client. We’ve enjoyed a good working relationship over the past 15 years.
What’s the best thing about working with SKILLED?
In a word, “support”. It’s important for the service provider (SKILLED) to provide the necessary backing for the client and site personnel. Of course, the same is applicable for myself to support both SKILLED and the client. We have a great SKILLED representative who is very helpful to the team at site.
What skills and experience have you gained while working for SKILLED?
We never stop learning. Certainly working with SKILLED in this role has provided opportunities to expand upon my project management experience. It’s interesting working with an international corporation. Many of the practices and standards are written for use by affiliates from around the world and in some cases, exceed the requirements of Australian standards.
What advice would you give someone looking for a career with SKILLED?
It’s you who personally has the opportunity to make a difference and guide your career path. SKILLED will provide the support, however progressing a career requires self-motivation and drive; you have to earn it. In most job roles, what you achieve is a direct ratio of how much you contribute. The rewards will follow.
