Tell us a bit about the work you do with SKILLED

My current role is a Dump Truck Operator at TESA/ SKILLED Singleton. I am currently working at an open cut mine in the Hunter Valley. I commenced at SKILLED in April 2012 as an operator on 5-on-5-off roster operating a 789 Caterpillar dump truck which carries approximately 180 tonne each load.

I mostly cart coal the majority of the time to the rom and then over burden/ waste to the dump! The company is the world’s largest exporter of seaborne thermal coal used to generate electricity and one of the largest producers of coal used to make steel and other industrial applications.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy how fun and positive everyone is!

Our crew is divided up into different digger crews and we all go out in the troopy at the beginning of shift discussing and planning the day ahead. Our team is normally comprised of a Digger Operator, Dozer operator and approximately five truck drivers. We all work together in a positive manner communicating in a friendly and professional way throughout the day/night. I enjoy listening to the casual banter on the two-way radio, everyone has a funny nickname or someone is paying out someone else!

I thoroughly enjoy working on D-crew and feel I am 'living the dream' as I get along really well with all my colleagues and supervisors on a professional and personal level, attending gatherings and events such as BBQ's and trips away on our five days off!

Why did you decide to join SKILLED?

At the time I got offered over 10 jobs from all over Australia! Why I joined SKILLED was because they were offering positions in the area I wanted to live in, close to my family and friends!

The SKILLED consultant was professional and efficient. Basically it took SKILLED one week to complete all my medicals, interviews, and inductions whereas it took my last employer over 3 months to do the same! SKILLED got me into a job fast!

What’s the best thing about working with SKILLED?

Working with a lot of people with a lot of mining experience. I am an active team member in a team with approximately 50 crew members. Most of the guys on crew have been in the mining industry for over 10 or more years! They are very experienced and show confidence in me! They give me a fair go and if I need assistance they are always willing to explain how I could do it better! My team is very safety conscious and I feel safe working with each and every one of them.

I am truly lucky to work on D-crew at Liddell and be a part of such Aussie safety culture!! Safety goes beyond the pit and to our families and in our homes!

What skills and experience have you gained while working for SKILLED?

I have been employed for 14 months operating the 789c, working in all weather conditions and environments.
