Vacation Student Program Supporting Women in Mining


SKILLED has contracts with a client in the Pilbara and in 2012 provided a workforce of 354 employees, 154 of whom were women.

Our client’s workforce in the Pilbara has notably the largest ratio of women with 154 (45%) women in their workforce. Female employees are engaged in a range of roles including:

  • Bus Drivers
  • Geologists
  • Administrators
  • Cleaners
  • Cooks
  • Camp Managers
  • Engineers
  • Samplers
  • Lab Techs
  • Trades Assistants
  • Wash Down Crew Members
  • Mobile Plant Operators
  • Project Officers
  • Store-workers
  • Technical Officers
  • Indigenous Trainee Mobile Plant Operators.

SKILLED promotes women in mining through our Vacation Student Program in partnership with our client. The Vacation Student Program is a paid work experience program. SKILLED has been involved in the program for the past eight years, providing local Pilbara students, both female and male, with the opportunity to experience work in the Mining Industry.

The Results

Over 50% of the 130 students that participated in the 2011/12 Vacation Student Program were women.

As a result of SKILLED’s commitment to diversity and programs such as the Vacation Student Program, 45% of employees in our client’s workforce in the Pilbara are women.
